Information Web

AX.C.07.05.03

A loose, deliberately decentralized network built to collect, verify, and sell what other people don't want known. It has no headquarters worth raiding and no single point of failure. Its value to a member is knowing things first, and its price is that it always knows more about you than you'd like.

  • Domain: Informational
  • Faction Access (circumstantial, Affiliated Standing or higher): +1D to Notice when actively working a lead the Web has an interest in

Standing Drivers

  • Gains: Supplying verified information the Web didn't already have; protecting a source; running an errand that expands the Web's reach.
  • Losses: Burning a source; supplying bad information that costs the Web credibility; working against a client the Web is currently serving.

Boons

Whisper Line | Organizational | Stage 1 | Free Action | Self | Session

Once per session, ask the Web one specific factual question about a person, place, or organization within its reach. The answer is whatever the Web plausibly already knows or can surface quickly; it is not omniscient and will say so rather than invent an answer.

Limit: Once per session.

Eyes Nearby | Organizational | Stage 2 | Free Action | Near range | Long Rest

Once per Long Rest, learn whether the Web already has someone watching a specific location or person within Near range, and if so, get one piece of current observation from them. Represents the Web's standing coverage, not a new tail you're commissioning.

Limit: Once per Long Rest.

Full Dossier | Organizational | Stage 3 | Primary Action | Organization-scale | Full Rest

Request the Web's complete working file on a person, organization, or situation: history, known associates, current activity, vulnerabilities the Web has documented.

Limit: Once per Full Rest. Costs 10 Standing Points, per AX.C.07.02. The Web notices who's asking about whom, and files it.

Adventure Hooks

  • A Full Dossier turns up information the PCs weren't supposed to have, and now someone knows they have it.
  • The Web asks for a source to be protected, but protecting them means the PCs can't act on what that source just told them.
  • Two PCs' Whisper Line answers about the same subject don't agree, because the Web itself is compromised or divided.
